Direct answer: subtract the bar and any included collar weight from the target total, divide the remainder by two, then place the same plate mass on each sleeve. If the target cannot be made from the available pairs, use the nearest suitable total rather than loading the bar unevenly.

The plate-loading formula

A displayed target should clearly state whether it includes the bar and collars. ToolBullet's target includes the selected bar. The current calculator does not add collars automatically, so include their mass by using a custom bar value when they are part of the required total.

The 100 kg value shown when the ToolBullet page opens is an example, not a maximum. The actual loadable maximum is determined by the selected bar and the quantities in the saved plate inventory.

Kilogram and pound equipment

Common gym inventories differ. International weightlifting competition equipment uses specified kilogram bars and discs, while many gyms use pound plates and 45 lb bars. Do not mix the printed denominations without converting them, and do not assume every 20 kg or 45 lb bar has the same rated capacity.

Why symmetric loading is essential

The solver searches plate pairs because the same mass belongs on both sleeves. Uneven loading changes balance and can cause the bar to rotate or tip during setup. An impossible target is not solved by putting an extra plate on only one side.

Closest achievable weights

Example: a gym with only 20 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg and 2.5 kg pairs cannot make every 1 kg increment. A request for 101 kg on a 20 kg bar requires 40.5 kg per side, so the useful result is the nearest available total below and aboveโ€”not an invented 0.5 kg plate.

Planning warm-up sets

Warm-ups prepare the movement and should not become a second workout. A practical pattern uses larger percentage jumps at the beginning and smaller jumps near the working weight, while reducing repetitions as load rises. The required sequence varies with the exercise, working load, experience, temperature and how the athlete feels. No fixed percentage ladder is universally correct.

Equipment and loading checks

  • Confirm the bar, rack, bench and plates are rated and suitable for the load.
  • Load large plates inside and smaller change plates outside.
  • Use collars where appropriate and account for their mass if the exact total matters.
  • Check both sleeves visually before unracking.
  • Follow the gym's rules and use appropriate safeties or competent spotters.
