Frequently Asked Questions

To add VAT to a net (excluding VAT) price, multiply by (1 + VAT rate/100). For UK standard VAT at 20%: a £100 net price becomes £120 including VAT (£100 × 1.20 = £120). The VAT amount is £20. Use the calculator above — enter your net price and select Add VAT for an instant result.
To remove VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, divide by (1 + VAT rate/100). For UK VAT at 20%: a £120 gross price has a net price of £100 (£120 ÷ 1.20 = £100). The VAT amount is £20. Select Remove VAT in the calculator above and enter your gross price.
The UK standard VAT rate is 20%, with 5% reduced and 0% zero rates applying only to qualifying supplies. A temporary 5% rate applies to specified children's meals, children's admission tickets and certain family attractions from 25 June 2026 to 1 September 2026 inclusive. Check HMRC guidance for the exact supply and date.
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a broad-based consumption tax used under different names and rules. Current reference rates include Australia 10%, Canada 5% federal GST with HST varying by province, Singapore 9%, New Zealand 15%, and India’s broad 5% merit and 18% standard rates with a 40% special demerit rate for selected supplies. Always verify the rate and tax base for the transaction.
EU VAT rates vary by country. Germany: 19% standard, 7% reduced. France: 20% standard, 5.5% and 10% reduced. Italy: 22% standard, 10% reduced. Spain: 21% standard, 10% reduced. Netherlands: 21% standard, 9% reduced. Ireland: 23% standard, 13.5% and 9% reduced. Use the custom rate field above to enter the rate for your specific EU country.
A VAT exclusive price (net price) does not include VAT. A VAT inclusive price (gross price) already includes VAT. For example: net £100 + 20% VAT = gross £120. When comparing prices always check whether they are quoted inclusive or exclusive of VAT — especially for business purchases where VAT-registered businesses can reclaim VAT as input tax.
