Direct answer: ToolBullet calculates volume load for each exercise as sets × repetitions × load, then adds the valid rows for the session. It is most useful when comparing similar exercises and conditions; it is not a complete measure of training stimulus.

Comparing sessions

If a previous comparable session totalled 5,000 kg, the change is (5,400 − 5,000) ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 8%. The percentage is descriptive. It does not automatically mean the workout was 8% more effective or that an 8% increase was appropriate.

Calculate exercise and session tonnage, save local history and reload a prior session.

Best use of the metric

Keep the exercise name, technique and counting convention consistent. Compare the same lift over time, use the local history as a log rather than a performance verdict, and combine tonnage with repetitions, load, perceived effort and qualitative notes. Current research uses several volume definitions—including number of sets and sets × reps × load—because no single measure captures every adaptation.

Units and conversions

Do not compare kilogram and pound session totals without conversion. A pound total will be numerically larger even when the physical load is the same. ToolBullet stores the selected unit with each local session.

Progress without chasing the largest number

Volume can rise by adding load, repetitions or sets, but each change has a different cost. A gradual increase that preserves technique and recovery is not equivalent to a sudden jump created by adding low-quality work. Compare rolling patterns rather than reacting to one session, and note planned deloads or exercise substitutions so that a lower total is not misread as failure. Where a programme uses “hard sets” rather than tonnage as its primary volume measure, record both instead of forcing every decision into one number.

Consistent counting conventions

Decide whether unilateral exercises are recorded per side or as a combined total, whether dumbbell load means one implement or both, and whether warm-up sets are included. ToolBullet calculates exactly what is entered; it cannot infer the convention. A clear convention makes local history useful and makes exported summaries understandable months later.
