How it works, limits and privacy

Character totals use extended grapheme clusters where supported, so many emoji and combining sequences count as one visible character rather than multiple UTF-16 code units. The custom-limit result compares that same count with the positive whole-number limit you enter.

Frequently asked questions

It counts extended grapheme clusters—what users usually perceive as characters—when Intl.Segmenter is available. A Unicode code-point fallback is used otherwise.
The tool removes Unicode whitespace before counting grapheme clusters. Punctuation and line-breaking marks that are not matched as whitespace remain.
Words use Unicode-aware segmentation. An empty field has zero lines; otherwise lines equal newline separators plus one.
